Exploring the Position and Function of Music in the Social Structure of Yezidi Society

This research employs a descriptive analysis to delve into the intricacies of the social structure of Yezidi society, focusing on the pivotal role that music plays across various social strata. The cast divisions within the Yezidi community manifest in every facet of their culture, with music occupying a particularly significant place due to its profound role in their faith. The interplay between taboo and holiness within the Yezidi community has uniquely shaped their musical expression, resulting in a distinct creative contrast, especially evident during religious festivals and events. This contrast enhances the contemplation of divinity within Yezidi society.
The primary objective of this study is to discern the positioning of music within the religious cast hierarchy of Yezidi society and elucidate its role in fostering social cohesion among different casts. This research is of particular relevance to scholars in sociology of music and ethnomusicology, offering substantial insights into the phenomena under examination. A comprehensive understanding of these dynamics facilitates a nuanced analysis of various dimensions. Key findings highlight the integral role of Qewals, who, as disciples, bear the responsibility of safeguarding sacred versus of their religion and actively participating in ceremonies across all segments of Yezidi society. Their performances with the def û Shebab (tambourine and flute) during religious ceremonies further underscore the ubiquity and significance of music in Yezidi culture.
