A geographical analysis of population growth and its impact on the development of Agriculture in Chamchamal

Abstract

Population growth has a direct impact on the development of agriculture. Population growth in city centers greatly reduces production capacity. It is also the reason behind city expansion and the migration of village dwellers to the cities; hence, it has decreased village population and caused food scarcity.This research is significant because Chamchamal has a large number of villages that host many resident who can contribute to agricultural growth, which has an impact on providing job opportunities and reducing unemployment. The research problem is centered on the rapid increase of population and its impact on the reduction of land available for agriculture, which in turn impedes self-sufficiency in food for the population in the research site. The aim of this research is to show the impact of population growth on the development of agriculture on one hand and to show the significance of agriculture labor market in the area. The method used in this research is comparative, descriptive analysis.Chamchamal city has expanded rapidly as a result of population growth in the city. In the whole Chamchamal district, the city residents comprise )88%( of the population,. Concerning age, the majority of the population consists of people aged between )15-64( which is )54.1%(. This is a positive sign in terms of job capacity in the research area. The research results show that, on a yearly basis, agricultural land has decreased by) 6.77%( over the past )20( years.
